Ghat region is geographically one of the most remote and isolated cities in Libya. It is located in the southwest of Libya, on the border with Algeria. Ghat is home to some of the largest and most influential Tuareg tribes in the country and has a population of approximately 24,347 people.
The municipality of Ghat is in severe need of infrastructure improvements to provide basic services, and until such investments are made, any authority will struggle to govern effectively.
The Ghat region previously consisted of 6 towns before the issuance of a number of decrees by the GNU that divides the Ghat region to the 4 separate municipalities which are:
1. Ghat Central Municipality – Consists of the main city of Ghat.
2. Tahala Municipality – established as an independent municipality under decree 33, January 2022.
3. Berket Municipality – established as an independent municipality under decree 33, January 2022
4. Awenat Municipality – established as an independent municipality under decree 423 September 2021.
Ghat is considered the fourth major city in the south after Sebha, Ubari and Murzuq, which is adjacent to the Algerian-Libyan border. It has a touristic nature as it is full of historical sites and a series of mountains that attract tourists.
